What this video covers

The narration of the video, chapter by chapter. Any draft shown is a starting point that the clinician reviews and edits before it is used.

Welcome

Welcome to Smart Draft — the fastest way to turn your clinical notes into a complete, professional report. In this video we will write a short session note, pick a template, set our preferences, and generate a report.

Enter your notes

Start in the Text Content and Files box. Type or paste your session notes here — patient notes, observations, or case details. You can also drag and drop files like PDF or Word documents straight into this area.

For this example, we had interview with a patient named John Doe. He presented with symptoms of depression and anxiety. We can type these information in this box in a raw format and without any structure or order.

Mental Status Examination

Below the text area you will find the Mental Status Examination section. Expanding it lets you record structured MSE observations that are woven into the generated report. You can fill in the fields with specific observations about the patient's appearance, behavior, speech, mood, affect, thought process, thought content, and insight. The fields are optional and you can fill in as many or as few as you need.

Include Previous Reports

If you have previous reports generated by Smart Draft, you can include them in the current report by checking the "Include Previous Reports" checkbox. This will allow the AI to reference previous reports when generating the current report.

Choose a template

Next, choose a report template. You can use one of your saved templates, write a custom structure inline, or leave it on the default. Templates control the sections and structure of the finished report. We have separate videos demonstrating how to create and manage templates so feel free to check those out if you want to learn more.

Output preferences

Under Output Preferences you can choose a longer, more detailed report or a shorter, more concise one — and set the pronouns used throughout the document. Your choices are remembered for next time.

Generate the report

When you are ready, click Generate Report. Smart Draft sends your notes and template to the AI and assembles the full report. This usually takes under a minute — your work is autosaved as a draft, so nothing is lost if you step away.

Review the result

The finished report opens right away — structured into clinical sections and written in formal language. Notice the buttons along the bottom: you can copy the text, download it as a Word document, or click Edit with AI to revise it using plain-language instructions.

Here you can specify the changes you want to make to the report, such as changing the tone, adding or removing sections, or adjusting the level of detail.

My Reports

Closing the editor brings you to My Reports, where every report you generate is stored. You can search them by name or content, reopen any report to keep editing, and download or delete reports in bulk.

Wrap up

That is the core Smart Draft workflow: notes in, professional report out. Try it with your next session note — and check the Templates video to make the output match your exact reporting style.

The AI drafts. You decide.

My Clinical Writer writes a first draft from what you record, type or upload. You review it, edit anything that does not match your clinical judgment, and only then sign or export it. The assessment, the diagnosis and the plan are always yours, and you remain responsible for the final record.

Patient data is protected as described on our security and HIPAA page: 256-bit encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access, audit trails, and a Business Associate Agreement that every account accepts at registration.
